Ballet Curriculum — Jacksonville Beach, FL — NOVA Dance And Wellness Academy

Ballet Curriculum

Ballet Technique Classes

NOVA is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9-level program combining high-quality artistic training with dancer health and child development basics. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels.

Pre-Primary through Level 5 will be taught by ABT® Certified Teachers who have successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 5 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Pointe Classes

NOVA's pointe curriculum is uniquely crafted by our founder, Aubrey Van Benthem, and based on a series of technical assessments, targeted exercises, and conditioning based on years of success in training and re-training pointe students. The curriculum is based on the research and published work of Lisa Howell, a world-renowned ballet physiotherapist.

Pointe class placement is tracked separately from regular ballet classes allowing students the option to choose whether they want to pursue pointe or not.

Pre-Pointe

Pre-pointe begins when students enter Level 2 Ballet. The class time is focused on assessing and instructing students in key exercises that target the strength and flexibility needed for safe and enjoyable pointe work. Students work on their exercises at home throughout the week and will begin to become students of their own athletic training. Before going on pointe, students must pass their technical assessment for pointe for their benefit and safety.

Beginning Pointe

This class is a fusion of research-based curriculum from ABT, Harkness Center, Lisa Howell, and NOVA's founder. Designed as a safe and gradual introduction to pointe, this class meets twice a week for 30 min at a time, allowing the bones in the feet to slowly build up strength and endurance, and culminates with fun center combinations that help students fall in love with their first few years on pointe.

Advanced Foot Control

This unique class is a must-have for intermediate to advanced pointe dancers. The barefoot barre and challenging foot and ankle exercises will fine-tune the dancer's strength and foot articulation, improving the dancer's ability to work through their shoe and access their full pointe range. This class is designed as the next step after beginning pointe but is also wonderful for advanced dancers who want to improve the quality of their pointe work or increase their endurance on pointe.

Conditioning Curriculum — Jacksonville Beach, FL — NOVA Dance And Wellness Academy

Conditioning Curriculum

NOVA brings cutting-edge research and athletic training to the dance world. Our conditioning classes for levels 1B - Level 5 comprise three key components.

PBT

Conditioning classes start out the semester with Progressing Ballet Technique, an internationally accredited program for dancers. It focuses on training core stability, weight placement, and alignment through a gradual approach of carefully designed exercises and repetitions of these exercises that trigger muscle memory. Students will gain a greater sense of body awareness, posture, placement, and correct muscle engagement. NOVA's classes are taught by some of the best licensed PBT instructors in the Jacksonville area. Check out our staff page to read their bios.

Functional Yoga™

A necessary supplement to any dancer's conditioning regimen, functional yoga focuses on simple bodyweight exercises that enhance basic functional movements. Whether unloading the dishwasher or performing classical Ballet, functional yoga provides the strength and stability to prevent injury and improve athletic performance. The key focuses of this class are hip and core stability and increased fascial and dynamic flexibility. Students will leave confident in their strength and dynamic movement.

Acro Curriculum

Pre-Primary

Pre-Primary acro will be offered using the Acrobatic Arts© curriculum. Classes are an exciting way for little ones to explore body awareness and movement and to further their dance skills. Basic acro movements such as summersaults, cartwheels, handstands, and more will be taught while hands-on instruction is provided to ensure safety. Classes are full of movement and variations of fun activities and focus on helping your child move onto the next levels.

Primary

NOVA's acro classes are based on the Acrobatic Arts© curriculum. Our certified instructors will work with students to build specific dance skills and athleticism. The purpose of acro in our dance programming is to develop a student's dynamic core strength, coordination, and proprioception necessary for dance, sports, and other recreational hobbies. Some of the skills they will learn include bridges, cartwheels, summersaults, partner exercises, and much more. Acro is an ideal complement to Ballet, and we highly recommend that our ballet students take both acro and Ballet. This upbeat, varied class will give your child confidence in their body awareness and daily activities.
